You are here: Fairleigh Early Birds Toastmasters > Grammarian

Grammarian , UH / UM Counter Role

As a grammarian, you have two basic responsibilities: comment on the use of English, and count all of the uhs and ums and and other "pause filler" words throughout the meeting.

What are some of the inappropriate words? "And," "well," "but," "so," "you know." What are some inappropriate sounds? "Ah," "um," "er." You should also not when a speaker repeats a word or phrase such as "I, I" or "This means, this means."

How are you supposed to comment on the use of English? Note all of the incorrect usages of the language, such as "I saw five person." Also comment and note all of the creative usages.
Keep in mind that some of the members use English as a second language, don't criticize too much.

Prior to the meeting

If you have not confirmed at the last meeting, please get in touch (email, phone) with the Toastmaster and the Vice President of Education and confirm your role.

At the start of the meeting

When called upon by the Toastmaster, explain your role as a grammarian for the benefit of guests. Also, you can give us some pointers on how we can improve and do a better job. Have you improved in that regard? Tell us about it and how you did it.

During the meeting

Record all of the filler words, incorrect and creative usages of English, as explained above.

At the end of the meeting

Give us a report how everyone did.
